With its county seat of Waycross, Ware County is home to over 36,000 Georgians and is the largest county in Georgia by area.  Locals like to say that Waycross is "the largest city in the largest county in the largest state, east of the Mississippi". Ware County was created in 1824 and is named after the mayor of Augusta, Nicholas Ware.

War County consists of one major city, Waycross and two census-designated places, Deenwood and Sunnyside.  There are also a number of unincorporated communities, such as Bickley, Dixie Union, Jamestown, Manor, Millwood, Ruskin, Telmore, and Waresboro.

As the county seat of Ware County, Waycross has a population of over 14,000 people.  The area was settled in 1820 and as such has a rich history, with two historic districts - Downtown Waycross Historic District and Waycross Historic District.  These are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, along with the U.S. Post Office and Courthouse, the First African Baptist Church and Parsonage, Lott Cemetery, and the Obediah Barber Homestead.  The area was originally named "Old Nine" or "Number Nine" and then Pendleton. It was renamed in 1857 to Tebeauville and then Waycross in 1874.

There are plenty of great shopping and dining options to be found in Waycross.  The Mall at Waycross Shopping Center is a nice mid-sized mall with anchors JCPenney and TJ Max, with about 25 other stores located in between. There’s also Flanders Shopping Center and a Walmart Supercenter.

Outstanding dining abounds in Waycross. If you want to find the best BBQ, steak and seafood in town, then look no further than Hog-N-Bones, featuring breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus full of meaty delights. For fresh and healthy Mexican and Southwest choices, Surcheros Fresh Grill is the best place to go. Wongs Palace offers the best Chinese cuisine in Waycross, along with great service.  Other places to try are Thai Smile, KD's Cafe, and Fancy Q Sushi Bar & Grill.

Ware County Parks & Recreation

Ware County offers a number of fine parks to keep you active and let you enjoy the great scenery of the area.  Okefenokee Swamp Park is the most famous of these parks, with 400,000 visitors every year, making it the sixteenth most visited refuge in the National Wildlife Refuge System. The park covers 395,080 acres and is located in Charlton, Ware, and Clinch counties as well. The Lakes Golf Course is an 18-hole course with a golf shop and campsites, along with a hotel.  If you enjoy camping, you’ll appreciate Laura S. Walker Park with its various array of amenities for camping and hiking.

Ware County Education

The educational needs of Ware County are cared for by the Ware County School District. The district includes a pre-school, six elementary schools, two middle schools, and Ware County High School.  The elementary schools consist of Wacona, Center, Williams Heights, Memorial Drive, Ruskin, and Waresboro.  Ware County Middle School and Waycross Middle School make up the middle schools.
