Charlton County, Georgia is located at the southernmost point in the state and is home to over 12,000 residents. Folkston is the county seat and home to around 4,000 residents.  Just north of Folkston is the city of Homeland, with a population of around 910 residents. The county was created in 1854 from a part of Camden County and named after US Senator Robert Milledge Charlton.

Folkston is the county seat of Charlton and was named after a physician named William Brandon Folks. It was originally created because a railroad station was needed for the Savannah, Florida, and Western Railroad.  In 1901 Folkston replaced Traders Hill as the county seat, and in 1911 it was incorporated as a city. The original train depot has since been restored and is home to the Okefenokee Chamber of Commerce and Development Authority of the City of Folkston and Charlton County. Folkston is also home to the oldest church in the county, Sardis Church, founded before 1821.

For great country cooking, buffet-style, then Okefenokee Restaurant will make you feel right at home. And you won’t have to look very far to find amazing BBQ with Jalens BBQ & Grill. Recreation

Residents of Folkston enjoy a wide variety of recreational activities.  The Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge partners with Okefenokee Adventures to provide a whole range of services such as canoeing, kayaking, or boating on the famous Okefenokee Swamp. Or if you want to go camping, Traders Hill Park offers a primitive camp site along with amenities such as restrooms, picnic tables, barbecue pits, nature trails, a boat ramp, and a fishing pier.

Education

The Charlton County School District serves the 2000 students living in Folkston and Homeland with a private school, a high school, and 3 elementary schools.  These schools include St. George Elementary School, Folkston Elementary School, Bethune Middle School, and Charlton County High School.
