Brantley County is part of the Brunswick, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area, and home to some 18,400 residents. It was formed in 1920 from sections of Charlton, Pierce, and Wayne counties and named after either Benjamin Daniel Brantley or his son William Gordon Brantley. Okefenokee Swamp is located just southwest of Brantley County.

The Brantley County Courthouse, located in Nahunta, and the Sylvester Mumford House, located in Waynesville, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Nahunta is the county seat of Brantley County, located at the crossroads of U.S. Route 82 and U.S. Route 301, and has around 1050 people living there. Nahunta was founded in 1873 and made the county seat in 1923. Other cities and communities in Brantley County include Atkinson, Hickox, Hoboken, Hortense, Schlatterville, Trudie, and Waynesville.

Shopping & Dining

Being close to Brunswick, residents of Brantley County have a number of great shopping and dining options within a short distance.  In Waynesville there’s Satilla Grocery and Dollar General.  For more shopping options, residents head into Brunswick for its great selection of places to shop.

There are also plenty of great options for dining located in Brantley County.  People come from all around to Gold House Restaurant in Nahunta for great burgers, fries, and all around hometown cooking.  Jerry J's Restaurant is another favorite in Nahunta where you’ll find country favorites and Southern iced tea. If you’re in Waynesville, then make sure you stop by the Hooterville Diner for more great country favorites and friendly service.

Parks & Recreation

Brantley County has a number of park facilities to keep you active or if you just want to spend some time relaxing in the open.  The Satilla Fields Recreation Complex has a number of amenities such as Baseball / Softball Fields, Football / Soccer Fields, Batting Cages, and Concession Buildings. Schlatterville Community Park also features a baseball field, along with tennis and basketball courts and a paved walking track. You can bring the younger kids to Waynesville Community Park where they can enjoy the playground, or you can explore the nature trail and pavilion. Also, Okefenokee Swamp is located just southwest of the county, with all of the recreational opportunities it has to offer.


The needs of students living in Brantley County are served by the Brantley County School District. There are 5 elementary schools in the district, namely Atkinson Elementary School, Hoboken Elementary School, Nahunta Elementary School, Nahunta Primary School, and Waynesville Primary School. Brantley County Middle School and Brantley County High School round out the rest of the grades.
